Live Music: To Dance or Not to Dance?

There’s a certain magic to a live band playing. Whether it is a outdoor concert or standing room, all of us have gone to an event with a live band. A lot of festivals bring Cuban bands to perform, which can make for a super special night. Today’s post considers the pros and cons of dancing Casino with live music.

Pros

  • “I mean it’s a live band!” -Andrea. There are a lot of times where we get into a routine of going to the local socials, hearing similar music and rotations. Live music can create a nice change to our usual routine. We can get comfortable in that, and maybe not challenge ourselves as much in our dancing.
  • Feeling the intention and energy of the band creates immaculate vibes. It is often uplifting to dance in the presence of a band. Picking up on the communication the band and singer are putting out can create really special moments when partner dancing.
  • You may get to hear a cover of one of your favorites, or a variation of one the band’s signature songs. Both Andrea and Alexa love listening to live recordings of Cuban artists. Since you may already know the song, when you’re dancing it gives you some familiarity to play around with.
  • Dancing in a partner is a lot of fun, but suelta can be too! Artists love to give direction to help get the crowd pumped. These moments can be super fun for those who want to dance alone for a bit.

Cons

  • Be prepared for some long songs. Cuban artists do this all the time, they take a tema and then stretch it for what may feel like an eternity. Sometimes you’re dancing with someone and you are ready for the end of the song, but it’s nowhere in sight.
  • The dance floor may be small. We have noticed that here in the US they will make big seated VIP sections or provide no real dance floor.
  • Unfortunately, if you are dancing with someone, it may mean missing the performance. A lot of times, dancers come on stage or even just seeing the band are things you don’t want to miss.
  • Be prepared for it to be LOUD. One of Alexa’s musts is earplugs, and they help if you want to prevent some ringing in your ears. This goes for indoor or outdoor concerts, you never know how close you are going to be to the speakers. If there’s anything we have learned, it’s that Cuban bands are ready to be heard.

Dancing with live music is not without it’s struggles. Overall it is a nice way to switch it up. We understand that some of the cons are easy fixes or non-issues. Which is great! We are always excited for a live band at a festival or locally. Let us know what your favorite part of live music is.

Bueno…ya tu sabes.
