This past weekend, I (Alexa), attended Rueday. Another event in the big apple for the year. Rueday was hosted by Rueda at the Park NY, and it was the first iteration of the event. While it is written in the name, this event intended to be a 1 day thing. I had a great time with friends and dancing, and enjoying what New York City has to offer. Let’s talk about it in this week’s post.
What was Included?
I purchased a out of towner early bird full pass for $60 which included:
- 2 workshops (3 options per time slot, 2 time slots)
- Boat ride ticket which was scheduled 6-10pm w/ DJ Jukanbaila
For the day-of the organizers also scheduled the following free parts:
- Pre-workshop Park dancing
- Lunch meet-up
- Dinner meet-up
- After-party dancing at Stuyvesant Cove Park
Other scheduled free parts for before and after the event were:
- Friday @ Industry City by Jukanbaila
- Sunday Brunch
- Sunday Rueda at the Park @ Central Park
What classes did I take?
- Rueda Switch w/ Chae Reid
- Rueda Contratiempo w/ Nilka Alcosta
My favorite part?
My favorite part was the Rueda Switch workshop. I love any chance I get to practice and learn more Rueda Switch. Chae was a great instructor too, and Reina switch was so great to learn. Everyone in the class kept such an open mind, and maintained a positive mindset. Also, it was so nice to feel the progress I have made in learning switch just a few times.
Overall Takeaways
Huge thanks to the organizers for putting together a lovely event. It was beyond appreciated how well you all were able to deal with any and all obstacles while still preserving the quality of the event. Additionally, it was so nice to be an attendee because of how good the communication was. I felt like information was streamlined, accessible, and clear. One of my favorite touches was the integrated google maps feature with pins for each location as well as times. The whatsapp announcements thread was extremely helpful as well.
I was only in town for things that happened on Saturday. It was really great to see people at the Oculus for lunch. Also, very strategic to have a walking group guided to the workshops (10 min. walk) which made everything so easy. The workshop space was AWESOME! The place had changing rooms and showers available for use, which was great for changing out of sweaty clothes. Each room for workshops was spacious and had good floor. Finally, I appreciated the structure of 3 options and only 2 hours of workshops, because I didn’t feel exhausted leaving the workshops, or like I lost the whole day if I had wanted to see the city in the morning or before the cruise. Plus, the line-up of instructors was full of quality.
The cruise was fun. The views were gorgeous, and really relaxed me. It was a beautiful touch to include a New Move competition in Edward Cruz’s name, and it was awesome to see people’s drive and creativity. Another beautiful touch was the display of pictures from a previous NYC boat ride. I loved seeing the skyline. We all had a lot of fun dancing to DJ Juakanbaile’s music. To wrap up the day we headed to the park and danced some more, and that was that.
Overall the value as an out of towner was really great, and it was a very well paced day. Hopefully 2024 is already in the books.
