Shall We Dance (Socially)?

All of us find dance in our own way whether it’s through: a legacy, a groupon, a Latin Night, or a class. At some point or another each of us becomes aware of what a social is. But, the real question, is it important to dance socially? It really depends who you ask, we are very partial to it being important, so here you will find why we think social dancing is important.

Andrea

You can always learn something new at a dance social. There used to be a standing event in Louisville where she first learned to dance Casino, but the event was primarily full of Salsa. At the time, there was nowhere to learn Casino outside of social dancing, so it served as her “class” for a long time. A lot of socials mix different types of dance throughout the night, so you may find a new one you fall in love with. We all start somewhere.

Dancing with people outside your typical community or class is also great for sharpening your skills. This applies for leads and follows. It keeps you on your toes when you dance socially with new people. Everyone brings their own twist to dancing, and that helps up all become stronger dancers and people in the long run.

Alexa

She actually started her dancing journey by purely watching social dance. Before she felt comfortable enough to dance, her eyes were glued to the movement of the people dancing. Granted, watching is still one of her favorite parts about dancing. Frequently, it serves as an inspiration to see everyone’s unique style in order to build one of her own.

What other reason than, it’s just fun! Social dancing is about more than dancing. It is a time where you get to see people and build community. The memories of each dance fade into one another, but the memories of building friendship last through each social. That alone is why social dancing is so important, because it brings joy. Plus, if you’ve ever been to a Cuban dance social, oh boy, they are a PARTY!

There is no one reason or way to dance. There is only the way YOU choose. Some people love taking classes, competitions, performing, socials, and the list goes on. Let us know why you DO or DON’T think social dancing is important in the comments below. Don’t forget to subscribe!

Bueno…ya tu sabes.

  1. Love these perspectives! I agree that social dancing strengthens your following (& leading) skills because you have to learn to adapt to people outside of your “class comfort zone.” It is a great way to see where you need to improve and practice what you learn. I used to be scared of socials until I realized most people just want to have a great time just like I do. Alexa, I agree, the best part about socials is making the memories! I have so many great memories with my casino family locally and across the country. Love you all!
